Definition

What is SeidrLab's AI consulting service?

SeidrLab AI Consulting is the ongoing engagement model that follows an AI Transformation Roadmap. We work alongside your leadership team to make AI decisions, build the first production systems, and run the governance that keeps the rollout responsible. We operate in three modes: Advisory (an ongoing retainer for strategic guidance), Sprint (a fixed-scope build of a defined use case), and Embedded (a senior partner sitting inside your team, providing fractional cover for any C-suite role). The same senior team works all three modes. Every engagement is scoped against your roadmap and quoted as a fixed fee before signing, with a six-month minimum on retainer engagements.

The problem

Why most AI consulting engagements disappoint

Most leadership teams have already paid for AI consulting once. Then they paid again, because the first engagement did not work. The pattern repeats because the market is broken in three predictable places.

The first failure mode is strategy without delivery. A consulting firm runs a discovery, hands over a strategy deck, and walks away. The client now owns a document and a problem: nobody internal has the experience to translate the document into production systems, and the consulting firm has moved on to the next account.

The second failure mode is delivery without strategy. A dev shop or a freelancer builds exactly what the brief says to build, without challenging whether the brief is right. Six months later the system is live, the team is using it sporadically, and the original assumption turns out to have been wrong.

The third failure mode is bait-and-switch. Senior partners pitch the engagement. Junior consultants deliver it. The leadership team meets the partners again at the QBR, six months in, when the work has already drifted.

SeidrLab is built around fixing all three. Strategy and implementation come from the same team. Senior partners do the work. The first deliverable on every engagement is a roadmap document the client owns, so the work that follows is grounded in what is actually buildable at the client's scale.

The offering

Three modes of AI consulting

Mode 1

Advisory

Ongoing strategic partnership with named partners. Six-month minimum.

Advisory is the ongoing retainer for organisations that have moved past the roadmap and need senior AI guidance at decision points. An agreed allocation of hours each month of structured advisory sessions with named partners. Async support over email or Slack between sessions. Quarterly strategy reviews. Designed for leadership teams that need a senior AI voice in the room without hiring a full-time executive.

Typical use cases: navigating a complex AI implementation, reviewing vendor proposals, course-correcting an internal initiative that has stalled, preparing board-level AI reporting.

Mode 2

Sprint

Fixed-scope build of a defined use case. Four to twelve weeks.

A Sprint is a focused implementation engagement. We take a defined AI use case from brief to production. The deliverable is a working system in your environment, tested, documented, and handed over to your team with a 30-day warranty.

Typical use cases: a single AI workflow built end-to-end (lead enrichment, document automation, internal knowledge retrieval, agentic process automation), a build-out from a roadmap recommendation, a vendor migration where the team needs senior delivery capacity for a fixed window.

Mode 3

Embedded

Fractional senior leadership inside your team. Three to twelve months.

Embedded engagements put a senior partner inside the client's leadership team for a defined period. We can provide fractional cover for any C-suite role — CTO, CDO, COO, CFO — drawing on partners and specialists from across the SeidrLab team. The partner brings SeidrLab's full methodology and network with them. Designed for organisations that need more than advisory but are not ready to hire a permanent executive.

Typical use cases: a major transformation program where the leadership team does not have AI experience in the room, building an internal AI function from scratch, supporting a CEO through a board mandate where the C-suite is short an AI voice.

The three modes are not separate products. They are three ways of structuring the same consulting relationship, scoped against the priorities that come out of the AI Transformation Roadmap.

Fit

Who SeidrLab AI Consulting is for

This is the right engagement if:

  • You are a CEO, COO, or board member at a 30-to-400 person scaling business.
  • You have run an AI Transformation Roadmap (or equivalent) and need senior people to help you act on it.
  • You need senior AI capacity inside your business but are not ready or willing to commit to a permanent C-level hire.
  • You have a defined first AI use case and want it built to production by people who will challenge the brief if it needs challenging.
  • You value vendor-agnostic advice and direct senior contact over a 'global firm' badge on the deck.

This is not the right engagement if:

  • You need a 12-month enterprise transformation program with 30 dedicated consultants. We are too small.
  • You have a fully-resourced internal AI team and need contract engineers, not strategy. Use a staff augmentation firm.
  • You are looking for a vendor to validate a decision you have already made and do not want to be challenged. SeidrLab will challenge the brief when it needs challenging.

The honest comparison

How we compare to the alternatives

The fastest way to know whether SeidrLab is the right consulting partner is to look honestly at the alternatives. Here is the comparison we make to clients on discovery calls.

Big 4 Boutique AI consultancy Staff aug / freelancer In-house AI lead SeidrLab
Team on the work Junior consultants managed by partners Variable, often strategy-only One contractor at a time One person's perspective Senior partners doing the work
Time to first output 6-12 months 8-12 weeks scoping Days, limited scope 3-6 months to hire 4 weeks (Roadmap), 6-12 weeks (Sprint)
Strategy and implementation Separate teams Often strategy-only Implementation only One person, both modes Same team accountable for both
Vendor incentive Often platform partnerships Variable None None Vendor-agnostic

The honest read: a Big 4 firm is the right answer if you are running a $1M-plus transformation with enterprise procurement and the badge matters at board level. A boutique is the right answer if your domain (life sciences regulation, defence, certain financial services niches) needs domain depth we do not have. Staff augmentation is the right answer if the work is defined and the strategic decisions have already been made.

SeidrLab is the right answer if you need to move fast, you need senior people on the work, and the engagement involves both deciding what to build and building it.

Scope and pricing

Every engagement is quoted to your situation

AI consulting engagements vary by scope: the scale of your organisation, the seniority required, how much of the build sits inside SeidrLab, and how much sits with your team. Every engagement is quoted as a fixed fee against a defined scope, agreed in writing before signing. No hourly billing. No surprise invoices.

The fastest way to get a number is a 30-minute discovery call. We will scope the right engagement type, name a realistic budget range, and follow up with a proposal you can take to the board.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does an AI consultant actually do?

An AI consultant is a senior practitioner who helps an organisation decide where AI fits, scopes the first projects, makes vendor and build-versus-buy decisions, and sets up governance. At SeidrLab, the consulting work covers strategy and implementation from the same team. The partner who recommends a system is also accountable for whether it ships and works. We are not strategy-only and we are not a build shop, we are both.

How do I choose an AI consulting partner?

Three filters. First, look at who actually does the work. Senior partners on the engagement, or a junior team managed by partners? Second, look at the incentive structure. Vendor-agnostic, or paid to recommend specific platforms? Third, look at the entry point. A productised diagnostic with a fixed scope and price, or an open-ended discovery that bills hourly? The right partner answers cleanly on all three. SeidrLab's answer: senior partners do the work, we are vendor-agnostic, and the entry point is the AI Transformation Roadmap.

How do you scope and price engagements?

Every engagement is scoped against the AI Transformation Roadmap and quoted as a fixed fee before signing. No hourly billing. No surprise invoices. The shape of the engagement (Advisory retainer, Sprint, Embedded) and the price band depend on your situation: organisation size, seniority required, scope, and geography. A 30-minute discovery call is the fastest way to get a realistic number against your specific situation.

What is a boutique AI consultancy?

A boutique AI consultancy is a small senior team that works on AI strategy and implementation for a focused client segment, typically without offshore delivery, junior consultants, or large enterprise overhead. SeidrLab is a boutique AI consultancy for scaling businesses with 30 to 400 employees, headquartered in Australia, with a presence and historical clients across Europe, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

What is the difference between AI consulting and AI implementation?

In most firms, consulting is the strategy work (recommendations, decks, audits) and implementation is the build work (engineering, integrations, deployment). The two are often delivered by different teams or different firms. SeidrLab integrates both. The partners who recommend an approach are the partners who build it. That is the practical difference between SeidrLab and the strategy-only or build-only alternatives.

When should I hire an AI consultant instead of an internal hire?

Hire an internal AI lead when you need full-time, on-site, multi-year ownership of a function and the strategy is already clear. Hire an AI consultant when you need senior expertise faster than you can recruit it (1-2 weeks versus 3-6 months), when you want cross-functional capability rather than one person's perspective, and when the scope is bounded rather than open-ended. The hybrid path is common: use a SeidrLab Embedded engagement to build the function, then hire FTEs to maintain and scale it.

Do you only work in Australia?

Australia is our primary market. We have a presence and historical clients across Europe, the United Kingdom, and the United States, and continue to work with international clients where the engagement is well-scoped and the time zone overlap is workable.

Can we start with a small engagement to test the relationship?

Yes. The AI Transformation Roadmap is built for exactly this: a four-to-five week fixed-scope engagement that ends with a board-ready deliverable you own regardless of whether you continue with SeidrLab. About half of roadmap clients continue into Advisory, Sprint, or Embedded. The other half implement internally. Both paths are fine.

Are you vendor-agnostic, or do you resell platforms?

Vendor-agnostic. We do not resell AI platforms. Our recommendations reflect what will work for the client, not what pays us a referral fee. If Microsoft Copilot fits your stack, we will say so. If a custom build is the right call, we will say that instead. Our incentive is to be right, not to maximise our scope.

What is fractional AI leadership?

Fractional leadership is when a senior practitioner sits inside an organisation for a defined period, functioning as part of the leadership team but on a part-time or time-bound basis. SeidrLab's Embedded mode is fractional leadership across the C-suite — CTO, CDO, COO, CFO, or technical program leadership — drawing on partners and specialists from across the team. A senior partner sits inside your organisation for three-to-twelve months, typically two-to-four days per week, with full leadership accountability during that window.

Do you sign NDAs and how do you handle confidentiality?

Standard NDA on every engagement. All findings remain proprietary to the client. We never share information that could identify a client without written permission. SeidrLab retains the right to use anonymised patterns and frameworks in future engagements, but no client-identifying information leaves your control.

The right engagement starts with a 30-minute call.

We will talk through your situation and recommend the right starting point: a four-week roadmap, an Advisory retainer, a Sprint, or an Embedded engagement. If SeidrLab is not the right fit, we will say so and point you somewhere better.
